I am currently working towards a National Diploma in Art and Design and have chosen to specialise in multimedia textiles. Weave, print, knit and embroidery are all areas I want to keep on developing and I think Textiles in Practice offers me the best opportunity to do this. The graduate work demonstrates breadth and expression.

Looking at the mannequin and using charcoal I created an expressive line drawing. I wanted to use hard and soft marks to illustrate sensitivity but also confidence. These drawings could be worked into with stitch to combine textiles and drawing.

The pieces above are from the project, 'The Human Condition'. I chose to look at archaeology. Colours and textures were very important, I stuck to using dirt browns and rusty oranges. The top piece is my moodboard, inspired by a Dazed&Confused shoot which used similar colours but also manipulated fabrics. The second piece is handmade paper where I included small textile samples, parts of them are hidden creating layers similar to archaeology, revealing found and manipulated textiles.

'Evanescent Elegance' taken from Li Edelkoort Spring Summer 2011 was a theme I made an instant connection with. The limited colour palette of whites and grey tones felt natural and appealing. The final outcome was a t-shirt and shell necklace made from old clothes and found objects.  Looking through Bloom I saw an article about ruffles and folds I recreated something similar on my moodboard (top image).

The piece above was a quick painting, I wanted to explore the contrast of thick and watery paint.

The photos above are of a jacket which I manipulated, this tied in with a trends project. I chose 'The Outsiders' after looking through Elle and Vogue. I liked the natural greens and earthy browns. Sticking to that colour theme I added fabric, ruffled parts, turned it inside out and took the lining out, making it unrecognisable.
